Category C1 Licence

Drive Medium-Sized Vehicles Up to 7.5 Tonnes

Category C1 allows you to drive medium-sized vehicles with a maximum authorised mass between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, with a trailer up to 750kg.

It is commonly needed for larger vans, ambulances, horseboxes, motorhomes and specialist vehicles that sit above the standard Category B car-licence weight limit.

Kent Training provides the practical training and DVSA testing route at our centre in Richborough, with package options that can also include your medical, theory tests and Driver CPC where required.

Some drivers who passed their car test before 1 January 1997 may already hold C1 entitlement. Check the categories shown on your driving licence before booking training.

Who Is Category C1 For?

C1 sits between a standard car licence and full Category C, making it useful across a wide range of specialist vehicles.

Common C1 Uses

  • Ambulances
  • Large vans and box vehicles
  • Horseboxes
  • Motorhomes over 3,500kg MAM
  • Local-authority vehicles
  • Utility and service vehicles
  • Selected recovery and support vehicles

C1 or Full Category C?

C1 is limited to vehicles up to 7,500kg MAM. If you need to drive rigid goods vehicles above 7.5 tonnes, you will normally need Category C instead.

Tell our team what vehicle you need to drive and what you intend to use it for. We can help identify whether C1, C1+E, Category C or another licence route is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles can I drive with Category C1?

Category C1 allows you to drive vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg maximum authorised mass, with a trailer up to 750kg.

Do I already have C1 on my licence?

Some drivers who passed a car test before 1 January 1997 may already have C1 entitlement. Check the categories and restriction codes on your current driving licence before booking.

Do I need a medical?

Where you are applying for provisional C1 entitlement, the vocational licence process normally includes the relevant medical requirements. Silver and Gold packages include the D4 medical appointment.

Do I need theory tests?

Candidates obtaining the entitlement through the vocational route normally need the relevant HGV theory tests before taking the practical driving test. Silver and Gold include Modules 1a and 1b.

Do I need Driver CPC?

Full Driver CPC is generally required when driving an HGV as the main part of your job, although exemptions and different routes can apply. Gold includes Initial CPC Modules 2 and 4.

Is Category C1 the same as Category C?

No. C1 covers medium-sized vehicles up to 7,500kg MAM. Category C is the licence category used for larger rigid goods vehicles above that range.

Can I tow a trailer on a C1 licence?

Standard C1 entitlement permits a trailer up to 750kg. For heavier trailers behind a C1 vehicle, you may need Category C1+E depending on the combination.

Can I use C1 for an ambulance?

Many ambulances fall within the C1 weight category, which is why C1 is commonly required for ambulance drivers. The exact licence needed depends on the vehicle's maximum authorised mass.

Where do I take the practical tests?

Kent Training delivers C1 training from Richborough, Sandwich, and the course packages include the relevant DVSA practical testing arrangements through our approved test-centre facilities.
