Control Lifting Operations Safely from the Ground

The slinger / signaller helps ensure loads are attached correctly, moved safely and controlled throughout a lift. The role links the lifting-equipment operator with the load, the planned route and the surrounding work area.

NPORS N402 develops the theory and practical skills needed to select suitable lifting accessories, estimate load weights, identify centres of gravity, apply safe slinging methods and communicate clearly using recognised signals and radio procedures.

Training is relevant across construction, civil engineering, utilities, ports, steelwork, infrastructure, manufacturing and renewable energy.

Slinger / Signaller competence is separate from the lifting-equipment operator, Appointed Person and Lift Supervisor roles. Each has different responsibilities within a lifting operation.

CommunicationRecognised hand signals, radio procedures and clear coordination with the lifting-equipment operator.
Load ControlSling selection, load balance, tag-line control, travel routes and accurate landing.

What Will You Learn?

The N402 programme combines lifting theory, communication skills and practical load-control exercises.

Roles & Responsibilities

Understand the slinger / signaller role and how it fits into the wider lifting team.

Lift Plan Awareness

Interpret lifting information, planned routes, landing areas and the limits of the assigned task.

Weight & Centre of Gravity

Estimate load weight and recognise balanced, unbalanced and awkward centres of gravity.

Lifting Accessories

Select suitable chains, slings, shackles and other accessories for the load and lifting method.

Pre-Use Checks

Inspect lifting accessories, identify defects and recognise when equipment should be removed from service.

Slinging Methods

Use appropriate hitching and attachment methods for balanced, unbalanced, bundled and long loads.

Hand Signals

Use recognised signals clearly and consistently to direct lifting-equipment operators.

Radio Communication

Use clear voice procedures where direct visual signalling is not sufficient.

Exclusion Zones

Control people, vehicles and other activity around the lifting operation.

Load Route & Clearances

Check travel routes, clearances, overhead hazards and landing positions before and during the lift.

Tag Lines & Load Control

Control swing, rotation and movement using suitable equipment and safe positioning.

Landing & Detachment

Land loads accurately, make them safe and remove lifting accessories without creating additional risk.

Your N402 Training Journey

The route depends on your previous lifting experience and whether full training, experienced-worker preparation or a test-only route is appropriate.

Choose the Correct Route

Confirm your previous experience and select Novice, Experienced Worker or EWT / Refresher.

Lifting Theory

Cover responsibilities, load characteristics, accessories, hazards and lift-plan awareness.

Accessory Selection & Checks

Practise selecting, inspecting and rejecting lifting accessories for different loads.

Slinging & Signalling

Attach loads safely and direct lifts using recognised hand signals and radio procedures.

Load-Control Exercises

Guide different loads through planned routes and land them accurately while maintaining safe control.

NPORS Assessment

Complete the theory and practical assessments required for the selected route.

Where Is Slinger / Signaller Competence Used?

N402 is relevant wherever loads are attached to lifting equipment and controlled through coordinated lifting activity.

Theory Knowledge

Responsibilities, lifting accessories, hazards, communication and load control.

Accessory Inspection

Complete pre-use checks and identify unsuitable or defective equipment.

Load Preparation

Establish weight and centre of gravity and select suitable slinging methods.

Communication

Direct lifting activity using accurate hand signals and radio communication.

Practical Load Control

Control balanced, unbalanced and long loads through practical lifting and landing exercises.

Successful Completion

Candidates meeting the required standard receive the relevant NPORS registration / operator card route.
