In England, the current certificate codes are LA – Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus and O1 – Signing, Lighting & Guarding. These are commonly referred to as the old Units 1 and 2.

The combined Kent Training programme is typically delivered over two days and includes training plus the required theory and practical assessment elements.

LA and O1 are the two key operative certificates in the English Street Works qualification structure. Operatives who also excavate or reinstate the highway need the relevant additional O-series certificates for those activities.

Each certificate recorded on the Street Works Qualifications Register normally lasts for five years from its certification date.

Training includes practical work with underground-service locating equipment and the signs, cones, barriers and associated equipment used to create a safe temporary streetworks setup.
