Before you can begin practical PCV training, every new driver must pass the DVSA Module 1a Multiple-Choice Test and the Module 1b Hazard Perception Test.

Frequently Asked Questions
The PCV theory stage is split into two parts:
Module 1a – Multiple Choice Theory Test
This test checks your knowledge of:
- Road safety for large vehicles
- Vehicle weights & dimensions
- Driver hours & tachographs
- Vulnerable road users
- Hazard awareness
- Vehicle condition & safety checks
- Environmental driving and fuel efficiency
Format:
- 100 multiple-choice questions
- Pass mark: 85/100
- Time allowed: 1 hour 55 minutes
Module 1b – Hazard Perception Test
This test assesses your ability to spot developing hazards while driving an HGV.
Format:
- 19 video clips
- Includes one clip with two hazards
- Pass mark: 67/100
You can only take your HGV theory tests after:
- Completing your D4 medical
- Sending your D2 licence application to the DVLA
- Receiving your provisional HGV entitlement back
Once your provisional entitlement is active, you can book your Module 1a & 1b tests immediately.
