The ABA workplace transport groupings changed in January 2026. Rider-operated reach and straddle trucks are now grouped under D1.
The current D1 grouping covers rider-operated reach and straddle lift trucks. The previous height restriction has been removed.
D2 was previously used for rider-operated reach and straddle trucks over 8 metres. It has now been consolidated into D1.
D3 previously covered stand-on reach trucks. These are now grouped under D1, with the control type recorded on course paperwork and certification.
D1 is the current ABA grouping for rider-operated reach and straddle lift trucks. These machines are commonly used for narrow-aisle warehouse work and high-level pallet racking.
From 19 January 2026, the revised ABA groupings consolidated the former D2 over-8m and D3 stand-on reach categories into D1. Control type should still be recorded where relevant.
No. The novice course is designed for complete beginners. Experienced, refresher and conversion routes are available for candidates with previous experience or existing lift-truck qualifications.
The currently published routes allow up to five days for novice training, up to two days for experienced and conversion training, and one day for refresher training.
Conversion training is for operators who already hold a recognised qualification on another lift-truck type and need training and assessment on a reach truck.
Yes. Reach trucks have different steering, visibility, stability and load-handling characteristics and are primarily designed for narrow aisles and racking operations.
ITSSAR does not prescribe one fixed expiry period for operator refresher training. Employers should monitor competence and decide when refresher training or reassessment is appropriate, with a planned interval such as three to five years commonly used.
Yes. Kent Training can provide suitable on-site training for employers where the truck, racking, training area and site arrangements are appropriate. Centre-based options are also available.
TOPS is ITSSAR's Trained Operator Passport Scheme. Accredited organisations record operator training on the system so training can be validated and verified.
Yes. Basic training does not replace job-specific and familiarisation training. Employers remain responsible for ensuring operators are competent and authorised for the equipment and workplace in which they will work.
Candidates should normally wear safety footwear, high-visibility clothing and any additional PPE required by the training location.
Yes. Individual, group and corporate bookings are available, including novice programmes, conversion training, refresher training and workplace delivery.
